National Thermal Power Corporation said that it would set up a 1,000 mw project near Nagpur in Maharashtra to cater to five states and two Union Territories as part of its efforts to add 20,000 mw capacity by 2012.

The NTPC has sought clearance from state authorities and the Centre for the coal-fired project, likely to cost about Rs 4,000 crore, to cater to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Daman and Diu, and Nagar Haveli.

The NTPC chief C P Jain said the corporation had sought in-principle clearance for the project, to be set up in 1,700 acres of land in Nagpur district, while approaching the ministry of environment and forest for undertaking survey and study in the land proposed.
