First power unit in 14 years

A new power project has become functional in the Capital after a gap of 14 years. The first 100 MW gas turbine unit of Pragati Power Project (PPP) started operating on February 20, 2002.

Inaugurating the unit, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the Government was committed to making dreams a reality.

The first unit would generate 104 MW of power. The second unit of 104 MW would start rolling in May this year.

Dikshit said the PPP would commence running to full capacity of 330 MW with the cranking of the steam turbine unit by the end of November this year.

The Chief Minister announced that the Government would take up the Bawana power project on a priority basis as the confidence is now higher with the successful rolling of the PPP.

The PPP is said to have many "firsts" to its credit. It is more environment friendly with the emission of Oxides of Nitrogen being one of the lowest in the country. Also, no fresh water is used by the plant . The PPP is using sewage water after treatment.

The PPP is similar to Kalyakulam (Kerala) project executed by BHEL. It has been planned and executed in a small area of 17 acres on two sides of the existing Indraprastha extension 220 KV grid station. The project is estimated to cost 1100 crore.
