Central Utilities To Help States Undertake Small Hydel Projects
With a view to encourage small hydel power projects, the Union power ministry has decided that the Central undertakings such as National Hydropower Power Corporation (NHPC), North-Eastern Electric Power Corporation (Neepco), Tehri Hydroelectric Development Corporation and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), would provide assistance to the states to undertake viable projects.
The decision was taken at a meeting convened by power minister Suresh Prabhu on Friday. It was also decided that the non-conventional energy sources ministry will ask the states to announce their policies for small hydro development projects.
Secretaries of the two ministry besides water resources secretary and chairman and managing directors of central undertakings under power ministry and central electricity authority chairman attended the meeting. Minister of state for non-conventional energy sources M Kannappan was also present.
The central PSUs identified as specialised executing agencies for small hydro projects would be working with state governments and work out feasibility of all identified small hydro projects within three months.
According to an official release, the local community will also be involved with the generation and distribution systems for such projects.
NEEPCO has carried out a comprehensive study of mini, micro and small hydro projects in the north-eastern region.
