The Green Mela!
Looking back, year 2002 has been quite eventful on the green energy front, with several related events dotting the globe. The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) at Johannesburg, COP-8 at New Delhi and a string of activities with respect to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emerging as the major landmark events.
Once again, Delhi was in the news due to environment-related reasons. Thankfully though, this time round it was global climate concerns at COP-8 rather than the court rulings on CNG and fossil fuel emissions. Quite unlike the much-publicised run up to the event and limelight it initially attracted, the COP–8 event concluded on a much quieter note. Though many issues remained unresolved, the one significant deliverable from the meet was the operationalisation of the CDM. The mechanism opens up many opportunities for energy efficiency projects in country. Though in general, energy efficiency projects are not business-as-usual, they are associated with additionality - a qualifying criterion for CDM.
The CoP-8 event came close on heels of the Johannesburg WSSD Summit. The summit itself hogged a lot of attention when it adopted millennium development goals of reducing the world poverty by half by 2015. A commendable commitment indeed!
December 2002 also marks the fifteenth anniversary of Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), a unique financial institution focusing on the high-risk areas of renewable energy and energy efficiency. Over the last fifteen years, IREDA has contributed significantly to the green energy cause. In recent times IREDA has also financed projects on energy efficiency. This issue of BEE carries a special feature on IREDA.
The other key highlights of the year included appointment of Dr RK Pachauri as the Chairman of IPCC, which was yet another milestone in India’s initiatives on the green energy front. Besides, the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association organised a major international event with the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) in Europe. In addition, several industry events organised by CII, FICCI, Assocham, and the Energy Forum all over the year, and the side events of the COP-8 added a lot of colour and enthusiasm to the mega-events.
As the current year comes to a close, looking back, it seems that 2002 was one big Green Mela, with celebrations at multiple locales.
Lets hope the mela continues through 2003!
