New Delhi, 25 October 2006: Reducing the power bill amount is fast becoming a less expensive proposition. BSES launched its "buy one get one free" Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) with a one-year replacement warrantee, during the last week of October. NDPL is likely to follow suit soon, so that consumers find it easier to switch over to these comparatively more expensive but less power consuming lamps.
The government is also trying to make the expensive solar water heaters affordable for the general public. "We are trying to tie up with solar water heater manufacturers and banks so that consumers can buy them at easy EMIs. On an average, consumers spend about Rs. 500 to Rs. 600 more on running geysers during winter months. The idea is to have an EMI of a similar amount for a period of three years. "The entire money spent on these geysers would be recovered in a few years' time by saving on power bill," said S R Sethi, Transco's Director (operations).
He added that solar geysers would have a capacity of between 125 and 150 litres which should be enough for a family of five to six and would cost about Rs. 20,000. The scheme could be announced next week, so that people can switch over to the power-saving mode by this winter itself. For government colonies, departments like PWD and CPWD may be asked to do the job.

25 August 2006: The Minister for New & Renewable Energy, Shri Vilas Muttemwar has said that his Ministry is currently engaged in the setting up of Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The SEZ for renewable energy would facilitate manufacturing of cost competitive equipments/system/devices with the help of favorable fiscal and infrastructure environment. Shri Muttemwar also said that they are receiving a very favorable response from prospective investors, both in India and abroad. The companies from US and Germany have evinced interest in participating in the SEZ for renewable energy, which is being considered by the Ministry of New & Rebewable Energy.
The Minister informed that the five State Governments namely, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh, have shown interest in locating the SEZ for renewal energy industry in their areas. Shri Muttemwar was delivering the inaugural address at the 6th ASSOCHAM Renewable Energy Summit.
Delivering the inaugural speech, the Minister said that his Ministry is keen to give all possible encouragement to the renewable energy sector, so that it becomes a significant contributor in contributing upto 20-25% of the installed capacity in about two decades. "We are also simultaneously focusing on research and development in this area which would yield results in the medium term", he added.
Stating that renewable energy sector has witnessed a substantial progress in last 2.5 years, Shri Muttemwar said that the cumulative renewable power installed capacity was nearly 8080 MW at the end of March 2006, in other words, about 6.5% of the country’s total installed power generation capacity. This was around 3500 MW at the beginning of the 10th Year Plan.
